The Story of CleanSea

CleanSea was started by twins Lukas and Mikaela Julher in 2019. Since we were kids we've spent our summers with our family along the west coast of Sweden. We've been swimming in the salty ocean. We've fished for crabs, mackerel and clams. Gone diving to explore all the fascinating marine life. And we've of course been on walks along the beautiful Bohuslän coastline. It's easy to say, the ocean has a special place in our hearts.

But on one of these walks we found a bay in Ramsvikslandet, full of plastic. Plastic bottles, bags, ropes, discarded fishing nets and plastic packaging in all shapes, sizes and colors. Thousands of pieces.

And so CleanSea was born.

If there's this much plastic in one single bay, how much is there in the rest of the ocean?

We learned that every hour, 5 bath tubs of plastic washes up in Bohuslän. 94% of seabirds in the North Sea have plastic in their stomachs, and millions of marine animals die every year... And by 2050, we're expected to have more plastic than fish in the ocean.

In short, we're losing our oceans. But these twins wouldn't give up the ocean we love that easy. And so CleanSea was born.

Our mission

CleanSea’s goal is to protect the ocean and coastline we love. To save animals from being harmed by plastic and ghost fishing gear. We do it by simply removing this harmful trash from the ocean, coastline and islands. And we want to get hundreds of thousands of kilos of plastic!

  • Coastal cleanups

We clean the bays, beaches and stretches of coastline where huge amounts of plastic washes up. These efforts keep the coastline beautiful, protect local marine life, and prevents plastic from returning to the ocean.

    Island cleanups

There are thousands of islands on the west and east coast of Sweden. CleanSea uses our cleanup-boat and removes all trash washed up on these islands to keep them clean and beautiful.

  • Dive cleanups

Lots of the trash in the ocean is under the waterline. To remove ghost nets, lost lobster cages, tyres, boat batteries and other trash from the ocean floor we do dive-cleanups.

Our impact is recognized by
